Is now the time to upgrade from Epicor 9, Vantage or Vista?

It’s a looming question many companies will struggle with in the coming months. There comes a time when the ERP software package that you are running may not be able to successfully handle certain needs in your business. Maybe you’re still running your company on too many spreadsheets or maybe that legacy system isn’t supported, but finding the right support is difficult. If you fall into these two categories, then now might be the right time to upgrade your ERP software.

With Epicor ERP 10, which was released more than a year ago, there is no better time than now to upgrade your ERP package. ERP 10 is proven to not only maximize your efficiency, but speeds have increased by almost double from ERP 9 to ERP 10.

Epicor ERP 10 no longer has the Progress layer that many customers have a love/hate relationship with. With the removal of this layer, everything now takes place in a SQL database and IIS with no other layers needed. In comparison, Epicor 9, Vantage, and Vista had layered steps in their platforms, which included a proprietary protocol, Java VM, single-threaded agent and legacy ODBC. ERP 10 only uses standard protocols that are multi-threaded and native to SQL.

Vantage and Vista only support running Windows Server 2003, which will be hitting end-of-life July of 2015. This date is quickly approaching, so plans should be made if you are planning on staying with these applications long term. There are a few hacks out there that can allow you to run on 2008 or 2012, but they are not supported.

When upgrading to Epicor ERP 10, many companies have now chosen to run their application and database on the same server. This reduces hardware costs and allows you to virtualize your environments more easily.

With any upgrade, there are always going to be pros and cons. Here are Bird Rock Solutions’ Top 5 Pros and Cons.
